“Cables”
This was killing me. I read articles about the “cables” released by wikileaks and everybody just pretended that “cables” was a perfectly acceptable term for… whatever the heck it meant. I wasn’t sure if we were talking tight-rope walking or cable cars, so I had fancy hands look into it.
To “Cable” as a verb meant to send a message through Telegraph.
Cables are a set of confidential documents that contain communications between nations.
Basically in reference to the WikiLeaks U.S. soldier Bradley Manning has been charged with unauthorized downloads of classified material while he was stationed in Iraq. This material were conversations between diplomats and embassies, The cables, which date from 1966 up until the end of February this year, contain confidential communications between 274 embassies in countries throughout the world and the State Department in Washington DC. 15,652 of the cables are classified Secret.
Ultimately Cables = Communications.
I hope this helps
